Enormous amount of food items such as grains, pulses, and spices get wasted due to infestation by pests. Before the situation worsens, these food items need to be treated via an Integrated Pest Management approach.
Fumigation is one of the most commonly used procedures of pest control.
What is Fumigation?
Fumigation is a process of pest control services that entirely fills the area with pesticides in gaseous form to kill or suffocate the pests hidden inside the area.
Fumigation is derived from the Latin word fumes which means fumes or smoke. Fumigation in old English was known as the action of perfuming with smoke. Over time, it changed its meaning to eliminate pests or insects with the gaseous pesticides.
What is Silo Fumigation?
A Silo is a huge structure for storing materials in large quantities especially the grains, cement, coals, and food products. The most common types of silos are tower silos, bunker silos, and bag silos.
Silo Fumigation is a systematic way of treating large amounts of grains in a storage area (silo). It is time and cost-effective method of treatment because large quantities of products are getting treated in one go.
So where else is Fumigation required?
We live in a globalized world. Trade helps in the development and growth of the economy. Imports and exports are necessary because no country is self-sufficient or can produce all goods themselves. Countries that are able to produce excess amount of goods export them. They import goods that they are not capable of producing. To export or import goods, the trader must ensure that the products are of best quality when it reaches the other country. Bulky products such as food grains are usually shipped to other countries through containers. These containers need to be fumigated to eliminate the risk of pests entering or leaving the country.
The types of fumigation which are done on structures are called as structural fumigation. In structural fumigation all living beings including plants and animals, foods must be removed from the affected structure. Then the area is tightly sealed and the fumigants are seeped in for a set period of time and then it is de-fumigated. The air quality of the structure is checked and only if everything is fine then the inhabitants are moved in.
Fumigation process involves using chemicals and pesticides and if not done properly might lead to various health-related issues. And hence, it has to be carried out by experts only.
